What could fit here?
In a codeword, each number stands for a letter. The same number always has the same letter within that puzzle. Different numbers must have different letters.
You know 4 = T and 11 = E. What familiar four-letter word might fit?
This small example has its own code, separate from the full puzzles.
Let the pattern help.
The two 11s must match. An answer ending in two different letters cannot fit these squares.
Finding a possible word is the first step. In a full grid, you also check the words crossing it before settling on the new letter.
See a word that fits
TREE keeps the T and both Es in their given places. That suggests 7 = R. In a full puzzle, put R into every square numbered 7 and check the crossing words.
Could TREE fit 4 – 7 – 11 – 12? No: E cannot belong to both 11 and 12. Matching the word’s letter pattern to the numbers helps you reject a tempting answer.

FOLLOW THE LETTERS
See a whole
solution develop.
The first lesson starts with a six-letter number: TWELVE. Check it against the starter letters, pencil in W and V, then carry those matches through the grid.
The worked route shows each word’s shape before that step and the new matches to add. It gives vocabulary nudges along the way, so you can follow with your pencil.
Try the lesson first, read a step when you need it, or work through the whole route. Your own solving order may be different.
